Trump to Announce His Policy on the JCPOA on October 12

U.S. government officials say that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, will announce the country's policy regarding the nuclear agreement with Iran, known as the JCPOA, next week, and it is expected that he will state that the Vienna nuclear deal is no longer in Washington's interests. The Associated Press reported on Wednesday, October 12, without naming these officials, that the White House has tentatively scheduled Mr. Trump's speech on this matter for October 12. Donald Trump has until October 15 to inform the U.S. Congress whether Iran is still adhering to the nuclear agreement or not. The new U.S. administration opposes the nuclear agreement reached between world powers and Iran during Barack Obama's presidency. Mr. Trump and his administration officials have repeatedly stated that Iran is not adhering to the spirit of this agreement. Meanwhile, there has been much speculation about the potential withdrawal of the U.S. from the JCPOA. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that he would present several options for decision-making regarding the JCPOA to Donald Trump, but he did not provide further details about these options. Mr. Trump himself recently stated that he has made his decision regarding the JCPOA and will announce it soon. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed in July 2015 by Iran and six world powers, has largely limited Iran's nuclear activities while also leading to the lifting or suspension of nuclear sanctions against Tehran. In this context, Germany has urged the U.S. to consider a dialogue approach with Iran, while the U.S. Secretary of Defense has called for conditional support from the Trump administration for the JCPOA. Putin stated that Iran must decide for itself whether to withdraw its forces from Syria or not. Tillerson mentioned that various options regarding the Iranian nuclear agreement would be presented to Trump.
