Trump to Be Tried for 'Conspiracy to Overturn Election Results' One Day Before 'Super Tuesday'

A federal judge announced on Monday that Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, will be tried on charges of conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in March next year. Judge Tanya Chutkan, a federal judge in the District of Washington, D.C., set the trial date for Trump on March 4 of the coming year. This date is one day before 'Super Tuesday,' when voters in 15 states will vote for their party's nominee in the 2024 presidential election. Currently, Trump appears to have the most support among Republican voters. Prosecutors wanted to start Trump's trial on January 2, but his defense team sought to delay it until April 2026. Judge Chutkan rejected both proposed dates, calling them 'unacceptable.' However, the trial date she set may complicate Trump's campaign and legal battles on multiple fronts. Not only will the March 4 trial coincide with the start of the presidential primary season, but it will likely overlap with other court cases involving him and his aides in various states across the U.S. In Georgia, Trump and 18 others have recently been charged with conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results. Prosecutors in Georgia have proposed March 4 for the trial, but the judge has not yet set a date. Three weeks later, on March 25, Trump is scheduled to be tried in New York regarding hush money payments to a porn star prior to the 2016 presidential election. On May 20 of next year, he will face a jury in Florida state court, where he has been charged with illegal retention of classified documents. Legal experts say that for the federal election interference trial to proceed, the dates of his state trials in New York and Georgia would need to be changed. In the federal election interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith, Trump faces four major charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States. Trump has denied the charges and claims he is innocent. Trump's lawyers, citing millions of pages of documents that need to be reviewed and potential conflicts with other court cases, sought to delay the trial date. One of Trump's lawyers, John Lauro, called the proposed March 4 trial date a 'violation of the oath of justice' and stated that no case of this magnitude has ever started in four months. However, Judge Chutkan noted that this case has one defendant and four counts and stated that Trump's defense team does not need two years to review the case and prepare for trial. Referring to Trump's presidential campaign, she said that setting the trial date 'does not depend on the personal and professional commitments of the defendant.' Judge Chutkan stated, 'Trump, regardless of his plans,' and 'like any other defendant,' must adjust to his trial date. Trump is the first former president of the United States to face such serious charges. If found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Among the four indictments Trump faces, the federal election interference case is the most significant. However, how this will affect his presidential candidacy remains unclear. So far, despite increasing legal troubles, Trump has remained the frontrunner for the Republican Party. However, according to Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University in Washington, a guilty verdict on election interference charges could change this lead. Lichtman stated, 'If [Trump] goes to prison, which is not impossible... he could still run, but do Republicans really want a man convicted of [attempting to] overthrow our democracy?' Trump criticized Judge Chutkan on his social media platform, Truth Social, calling her a 'Trump-hating judge' and vowed to appeal her ruling on the trial date. However, legal experts say the trial date is not subject to appeal.
