Trump to Lead Special Task Force for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Friday, March 8, the formation of a special task force to manage the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which he will lead. This World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, occurring amid tensions in U.S. relations with its two neighbors since Trump's return to the White House. Trump made the announcement during a meeting with Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, at the White House. Regarding the existing tensions with Canada and Mexico, he stated that this would add to the 'excitement' of the matches and is a 'positive factor.' The task force led by Trump will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and ensuring the security of the matches, an event expected to draw millions from around the world to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. After meeting with Infantino and other FIFA officials, Trump described hosting the World Cup as a 'great honor' for the U.S. and expressed interest in attending several matches. This will be the first World Cup featuring 48 countries, with FIFA stating that 78 matches will be held in the U.S., while Canada and Mexico will each host 13 games. The final match will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Infantino, while appreciating Trump's support, stated that this will be the best World Cup and a 'unique showcase.' He also presented a personalized soccer ball to the U.S. President and unveiled the trophy for the Club World Cup, which will be held in the U.S. this summer with the best clubs in the world.
