Trump Welcomes New UN Security Council Sanctions Against North Korea

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, welcomed the new round of sanctions against North Korea on Friday, December 22, stating that the consensus among Security Council members indicates that the world seeks peace. According to Reuters, the United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions against North Korea in response to its latest missile test. Under these sanctions, North Korea's access to oil product imports is limited, and the income of its laborers abroad will decrease. According to this resolution, 90% of oil product imports such as gasoline and diesel to North Korea are banned, and the country can import a maximum of 500,000 barrels of oil products. Additionally, North Korean workers in other countries must return to their homeland within 24 months. This resolution, drafted by the United States, also limits North Korea's crude oil imports to four million barrels per year. In this context, Donald Trump tweeted on Friday: 'The UN Security Council just voted 15-0, with no opposition, for new sanctions against North Korea. The world wants peace, not death!' On December 7, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that, according to Pyongyang, can target the entire territory of the United States and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. In this regard, Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, stated that the unanimous vote by the 15 members of the Security Council sends a clear message to Pyongyang that further defiance will lead to increased punishment and greater isolation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also called for the implementation of these sanctions by all countries and urged all parties involved in the Korean Peninsula crisis to exercise restraint. South Korea also welcomed the UN Security Council's resolution. North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong-un, have repeatedly threatened South Korea, the U.S., and Japan with preemptive nuclear strikes. U.S. officials maintain that they still believe political and diplomatic solutions may be viable, but they emphasize that if a war breaks out, the North Korean regime will be destroyed. The new UN Security Council sanctions, which are the tenth sanctions package against North Korea, mark the fourth action by the Security Council to intensify sanctions on Pyongyang in the past six months.
