Trump's National Security Advisor: Europe Must Play a Greater Role in Supporting Ukraine

National Security Advisor to Donald Trump, Mike Waltz, stated that senior U.S. officials will travel to Europe this week. According to the Associated Press, the U.S. National Security Advisor said American and European officials are discussing how to end the war in Ukraine, nearly three years after Russia's full-scale invasion. Waltz's remarks came after media reports indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss steps towards achieving peace. There are concerns that Trump may halt extensive military aid to Kyiv. A day earlier, the New York Post reported that Trump had a phone conversation with Putin regarding steps to reach a negotiated solution. While traveling on Air Force One to New Orleans, Trump refrained from providing details about this phone call during a conversation with reporters. He stated, 'We are trying to end this war. This is a war that would never have happened if I were president, but we are making progress. However, I cannot say anything.' Trump added, 'We must end this war. This war will end.' The Kremlin has not confirmed anything regarding the Trump-Putin call. Waltz also mentioned that Europe must play a greater role in this conflict. In a television interview, he noted that the Russian economy is not in good shape and that Trump 'is ready to impose taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Moscow to bring Putin to the negotiating table.' Waltz emphasized that the Trump administration is looking to use this week's meetings in Europe to initiate discussions about reducing some U.S. aid to Ukraine. He stated that European allies must also play a greater role in supporting Ukraine. Zelensky: Trump must guarantee that Russian aggression will not be repeated.
