Trump's Proposed UN Representative Calls for 'Review' of JCPOA

Nikki Haley, Donald Trump's proposed nominee for the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, stated that it would be better for Washington to 'review' the Iran nuclear deal rather than unilaterally withdraw from it. According to Reuters, Haley responded to questions from U.S. lawmakers on Monday, January 29. One of the topics discussed was the Iran nuclear agreement, which Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, has called 'terrible' and has said he would annul. Haley said in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that it would be better to examine all 'details of this agreement with Iran' and 'see if the Iranians are really adhering to this agreement.' She added, 'If we find instances of violations of the agreement, we will take action on those matters.' Previously, Rex Tillerson, Trump's proposed Secretary of State, also told U.S. lawmakers in the Senate that he would conduct a 'complete review' of the nuclear agreement. He also stated that Iran should not have uranium enrichment on its own soil. This comes as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif have ruled out any renegotiation of the JCPOA and warned the U.S. government about the consequences. On the other hand, on Monday this week, Federica Mogherini, the EU's foreign policy chief, reiterated the importance of the 1+5 nuclear agreement with Iran, calling the JCPOA 'a very important agreement.' On Tuesday, an EU official announced that the EU had made informal contacts with the president-elect's transition team to explain the aspects of the nuclear agreement with Iran to them. Nikki Haley, the governor of South Carolina, is a Republican of Indian descent who was a critic of Donald Trump during the election campaign.
