Views: 7 KABUL (Pajhwok): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without regional support, adding that Israel must not be allowed to derail a US-Iran agreement.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Istanbul on Saturday, Al Jazeera reported.
“No solution that does not draw strength from the will and contributions of regional countries can be lasting,” Erdogan said.
“We are closely following the Israeli administration’s attempts to derail the US-Iran agreement. The current war-driven Israeli government must not be allowed to plunge our region into war and bloodshed again,” he added.
Erdogan has repeatedly accused Israel of attempting to undermine US-Iran diplomacy and has condemned Israeli attacks on Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.
Meanwhile, delegations from the United States and Iran held indirect talks in Qatar last week to advance negotiations following recent hostilities between the two sides.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran would establish a “communication channel” with Washington to report any violations of the agreement.
The deal, brokered by Qatar and Pakistan, reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and steps toward agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, alongside a roadmap for a permanent settlement.
However, both sides reportedly carried out retaliatory strikes last week while also disagreeing over the interpretation of the agreement’s provisions.
