Two Human Rights Organizations Call for Immediate Global Action to Halt Executions of Three Imprisoned Protesters in Iran

Two human rights organizations have called for global intervention to stop the imminent executions of three imprisoned protesters in Iran. Amnesty International and the Iran Human Rights Organization highlighted the potential execution of Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashimi, and Saeed Yaghoubi, defendants in the 'Isfahan House' case, urging the international community to prevent the execution of these protesters. Diana Tahavi, Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, on Wednesday, May 17, referred to 'forced confessions under torture and the lack of evidence against these three defendants as another example of the shameful disregard of Iranian authorities for the right to life and fair trial,' and described the death sentences of these three individuals as 'revenge against a brave generation of protesters.' Tahavi called for 'immediate and bold action from the international community to stop the execution of these protesters,' referencing the numerous executions that have taken place in Iran in recent weeks. It has been reported that prison officials informed the families of these three prisoners that Wednesday, May 17, would be their last visit with the defendants. The Iran Human Rights Organization also urged the global community to 'do everything possible to prevent the execution of these three protesters.' Mahmoud Amiri Moghaddam, director of the Iran Human Rights Organization, stated that the death sentences of Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, and Saleh Mirhashimi were 'based on confessions obtained under torture and without adhering to any fair trial standards,' adding, 'The international community can prevent this crime with its response.' Amiri Moghaddam called on all governments that respect human rights and maintain diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic to exert all efforts to save the lives of these three protesters. Recently, a handwritten note from these three prisoners titled 'Don't Let Them Kill Us' was published on social media, in which they called for help from 'fellow citizens and compatriots' to prevent their execution. Raha Bahreini, a researcher at Amnesty International, stated in an interview with the Persian section of Voice of America that the Islamic Republic of Iran is the second-largest executor of death sentences in the world. The actions of Isfahan citizens to prevent the execution of the three imprisoned protesters continue, with protests ongoing as the threat of execution looms over many condemned individuals. A nighttime gathering took place outside the Dastgerd prison in Isfahan to prevent the executions, during which shots were fired at the protesters. Concerns are growing over the potential execution of three detained protesters in the 'Isfahan House' case.
