Two Killed in Shooting Incident at Israeli Embassy in Jordan

According to reports from Jordan, during a shooting incident inside the Israeli embassy in Amman, two Jordanian citizens were killed and one Israeli citizen was injured. Initially, only one death was reported, but a second individual succumbed to their injuries hours later. Based on an Associated Press report citing a statement from Jordan's Public Security Directorate, several Jordanians had entered the Israeli embassy building for carpentry work prior to the shooting. The statement did not specify the number of Jordanians present in the building, but later Reuters reported, citing Jordanian police, that there were two. Meanwhile, the news website Hala News, which Associated Press describes as linked to the Jordanian army, reported that two of the Jordanians who were severely injured died after being transferred to the hospital. Earlier, news agencies reported the death of one Jordanian and the injury of one Israeli in this incident, emphasizing that the condition of the injured Israeli was unstable. According to Jordanian media reports, the Jordanian Minister of Interior personally arrived at the embassy to oversee the situation. Reuters noted that violence against Israeli nationals in Jordan is very rare. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has not yet reacted to these reports, but according to Reuters, Israeli media have been barred from covering the incident. Jordan has had full diplomatic relations with Israel at the ambassadorial level since 1994, and the Israeli embassy in Amman has been active for the past 23 years. More than half of Jordan's seven million population is of Palestinian descent, having either fled to Jordan themselves or having parents who did so since the establishment of Israel in 1948. Moreover, despite Israel's 50-year control over East Jerusalem, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, Jordan is considered the custodian of this important site for Muslims. There is speculation that the incident on Sunday night at the Israeli embassy in Amman may be related to the violent events of the past nine days in East Jerusalem over the Al-Aqsa Mosque, especially since Amman, the capital of Jordan, was the scene of anti-Israeli protests on Friday in response to recent events at the mosque. Jordanian officials, including King Abdullah of Jordan, as well as the Speaker of the Parliament and the Foreign Minister, have warned senior Israeli officials about the consequences of escalating this crisis in recent days. Since the armed attack by three Arab citizens of Israel on July 14, which resulted in the deaths of two Israeli security personnel and the attackers themselves near the Al-Aqsa entrance, widespread clashes have occurred. Palestinians have considered the installation of metal detectors at the entrances to the Al-Aqsa Mosque as an insult and an invasion of the 'Noble Sanctuary' and have clashed with Israelis. On the Fridays of July 21 and 22, five Palestinians were killed, and three members of an Israeli family were stabbed to death in their home in the West Bank.
