Two Mortars Fired from Syrian Territory into the Golan Heights

An Israeli military official stated that on Tuesday, January 27, two mortars were fired from inside Syria into the Golan Heights. This attack did not result in any casualties. Israel responded to this attack with artillery fire. No group has claimed responsibility for this attack yet, but the firing of these two mortars comes nine days after Israeli helicopters targeted a border area in Syrian territory, during which a brigadier general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and several members of Hezbollah Lebanon, as well as Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of former Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, were killed. Following this, the IRGC and Hezbollah Lebanon threatened Israel with retaliatory actions. Shortly after these threats, some Israeli media reported that the country had sent a 'message' to Iran through Russia, urging them not to seek revenge for the killing of an IRGC commander and Hezbollah members, and called for 'calm' from Iran. According to these reports, which were also reflected in the 'Times of Israel,' this 'message' was conveyed by Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's Foreign Minister, during his recent meeting with Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, in Moscow. Israeli media stated that Lieberman asked Russian leaders to urge Iran to 'remain calm.' Israeli Channel 2 reported on Friday, January 24, that a Hezbollah convoy, accompanied by Brigadier General Mohammad Aliollahdadi, was visiting a headquarters in Quneitra in the Golan region of Syria. Israeli media, citing some officials from the country, stated that this headquarters was established for rocket attacks on northern Israel and attempts to abduct military and civilian personnel from this country. The Israeli army has recently been on high alert along the borders with Lebanon and Syria, increasing the number of troops and tanks stationed in these areas. In recent days, Israel has also deployed the 'Iron Dome' system to counter the potential launch of rockets and missiles towards its northern borders. The Golan Heights, located on the border between Syria and Israel, has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
