Two Republican Congress Members: The Islamic Republic is Still Considering Assassination in America for Revenge on Qassem Soleimani

At least two Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have requested a confidential meeting with certain intelligence and security officials of the U.S. government to discuss the "efforts of the Islamic Republic" to assassinate former U.S. officials. Free Beacon reported on Thursday that this letter was signed by Mark Green and August Pfluger, two Republican members of the House of Representatives. The letter is addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security, the FBI Director, and the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center of the United States. These two Republican members of the House of Representatives stated that they have asked the Biden administration to provide Congress with information about the number of active plots by the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces against American citizens on U.S. soil. In their letter, these Republican members mentioned Brian Hook, Mike Pompeo, and John Bolton, officials from the Trump administration, and wrote that the Islamic Republic continues to threaten these officials under the pretext of revenge for the killing of Qassem Soleimani and is planning their assassination. Mark Green, one of the signatories of this letter, told Free Beacon that the Biden administration should send the message to Iran that any threat to U.S. security is intolerable. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department responded to Free Beacon's request, stating that the U.S. government takes any threats seriously and defends and protects its citizens; this includes all those who have served or are currently serving the U.S. On January 3, 2020, the U.S. military, under the orders of Donald Trump, targeted the vehicle carrying Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike near Baghdad airport, resulting in his death as well as that of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander and field commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces. The U.S. announced at the time that this attack was in retaliation for the killing of U.S. forces by the IRGC and to prevent further targeting of American forces by Qassem Soleimani. Some security and military activists of the Islamic Republic have repeatedly mentioned Brian Hook, Mike Pompeo, and John Bolton as Trump’s advisors responsible for Soleimani's killing and have spoken of "harsh revenge" against them. It was previously reported that Mike Pompeo and Brian Hook, the special envoy of the Trump administration for Iran, are still under security protection to counter any assassination plots. On January 10, 2023, Voice of America reported that the Biden administration had increased protection for senior officials of the previous U.S. administration, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in response to threats from the Islamic Republic. The U.S. State Department has previously informed Congress about serious and credible threats against Pompeo's life and also against Brian Hook. Last year, the State Department announced that due to threats from Iran, it spends over two million dollars a month to ensure the security of two former officials.
