U.S. and Australian Defense Ministers Emphasize Strengthening Cooperation

On Friday, February 8, the U.S. Secretary of Defense met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Australia at the Pentagon, emphasizing the high priority of the alliance with Australia in U.S. defense policy. 'Pete Hegseth' stated that his mission in this role is to 'ensure the strength of the alliance' between the United States and allies like Australia, as this alliance strengthens global security. He highlighted that President Trump has fully supported the trilateral security cooperation between the U.S., Australia, and the UK and recognizes its importance in developing U.S. defense infrastructure and regional missions in the Indo-Pacific. Richard Marles also expressed satisfaction with his country's cooperation with the United States, particularly in maritime equipment, stating that strengthening Australia's naval capabilities is 'vital not only for the U.S. and Australia but also plays an important deterrent role in the Indo-Pacific region and globally.' During the meeting, the U.S. Secretary of Defense responded to a question about the possibility of U.S. troops withdrawing from Syria, stating that decisions in this regard will be made considering all strategic interests and will be the responsibility of the U.S. President. He added that it is the Pentagon's duty to plan for all possible scenarios, but at this stage, any predictions about short-term, medium-term, or long-term decisions are merely speculation. The U.S. Secretary of Defense praised Israel's military actions against the Iranian government and stated that the Pentagon is considering all options regarding Gaza. He emphasized the 'unbreakable bond' between the U.S. and Israel, and his nomination for Secretary of Defense was confirmed by the Senate.
