U.S. and Saudi Officials Discuss Countering the Iranian Government

The U.S. Treasury Department announced consultations with Saudi Arabia regarding Washington's efforts to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons, counter its ballistic missile program, and eliminate threats posed by the Islamic Republic's proxies. According to a statement from the department on Monday, March 11, Scott Busent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, spoke with Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan, the Saudi Minister of Finance, emphasizing the importance of joint cooperation in facing new challenges and opportunities in the Middle East and the world. Two weeks prior, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth discussed U.S. support for Saudi Arabia against potential attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxy forces during a meeting with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Khalid bin Salman. Recently, Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's Foreign Minister, mentioned that one of the consequences of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons would be the emergence of a 'nuclear competition in the Middle East,' including among countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Saudi Arabia has particularly taken an active role in regional and international developments in recent weeks by hosting meetings between the U.S. and Russia, as well as discussions between American and Ukrainian officials. Marco Rubio's meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince in Jeddah focused on the Middle East and Ukraine. Rubio commented on Iran's reaction to Trump's letter, stating that they have only received what Khamenei has publicly said. Trump expressed hope regarding the outcomes of negotiations with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. The Israeli Foreign Minister stated that a military option against the Islamic Republic must remain on the table.
