U.S. Attorney General Warns of Increased Threats Amid Israel-Hamas War

Merrick Garland, the U.S. Attorney General, noted the rise in threats against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab citizens in the U.S. following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, stating that the U.S. Department of Justice is monitoring these incidents. During a press conference on Thursday, October 19, in Jacksonville, Florida, Garland highlighted the special attention U.S. judicial officials are giving to threats against followers of various religions and emphasized the Department of Justice's efforts to identify and respond to hate crimes and threats of violence. He announced that the FBI and U.S. prosecutors have been tasked since last week to collaborate with local police and government agencies to respond to these threats. He also urged federal prosecutors to maintain contact with religious leaders and community leaders across the U.S. According to Reuters, Garland plans to meet with police officials in Miami, home to the largest Jewish community in the U.S. The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 mostly civilian residents, and the subsequent bombing of Gaza by Israel, have sparked tensions worldwide, including in the U.S. The FBI has stated that it is investigating the murder of a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy, who was stabbed, as a hate crime. The suspect in this case has been charged with committing a hate crime. Officials have cited the Palestinian heritage of the boy and his mother as the reason for their attack in Illinois. U.S. authorities have also reported the indictment of a man suspected of sending threatening messages to a Jewish organization in North Carolina. The report indicates that incidents of anti-Semitism in the U.S. had already been on the rise prior to the current war between Israel and Hamas. Previously, the non-governmental organization 'Anti-Defamation League,' which works against anti-Semitism and hate speech, reported a significant number of anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. last year. The U.S. and the U.K. have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon. Biden is speaking to Americans about aid to Israel and Ukraine. The U.S. National Security Council stated that Israel was not involved in the attack on the Gaza hospital. The U.S. has sanctioned 10 individuals and entities linked to Hamas militants.
