U.S. Charges Iranian and Iranian-American in Drone Attack Case

U.S. prosecutors announced on Monday that charges have been filed against two individuals in connection with a drone attack by Iranian-affiliated militants in Jordan, near the Syrian border, which occurred last January. This attack resulted in the deaths of three American military personnel and injuries to over 40 others. Federal prosecutors in Boston stated that they intend to announce the charges against an Iranian citizen and a dual Iranian-American national at a press conference later on Monday. The charges include violations of export laws and significant support for the Iranian government related to this drone attack. According to Reuters, one of the individuals, named Mehdi Mohammad Sadeghi, has been arrested in Massachusetts and is expected to appear in court soon. The other individual, Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, has been arrested outside the U.S., although the report did not specify in which country he was detained. U.S. officials announced on Monday night at a press conference that by examining the drone used in the attack on the base hosting American forces in Jordan, they were able to determine how its parts made their way to the Iranian drone used in the January attack. They stated that Abedini Najafabadi, who owns a company in Iran that has ties to the government and the Revolutionary Guards, obtained an American-made part through Mehdi Mohammad Sadeghi, who worked at the manufacturing company, via a shell company in Europe. Abedini Najafabadi was arrested in Italy through the efforts of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and U.S. officials are working to bring him to the U.S. for trial. Among the charges against them is the violation of a series of regulations related to export restrictions to Iran, which allegedly led to the deaths of American soldiers in the drone attack. These charges pertain to the first deadly attack against American forces since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. President Joe Biden at that time held Iranian-affiliated militants responsible for the drone attack against American forces, an attack that caused a significant shock in the Middle East. The coalition known as 'Islamic Resistance' in Iraq, composed of radical militia groups affiliated with the Islamic Republic, claimed responsibility for the attack on three bases, including one at the Jordan-Syria border. However, the Iranian government has denied any involvement in this attack.
