U.S. Commander Comments on Iran's Behavior in the Persian Gulf After Withdrawal from JCPOA

The commander of the United States Navy states that the Trump administration's withdrawal from the JCPOA marked the beginning of a "period of uncertainties" and heightened vigilance regarding Iran's actions in the Persian Gulf, which the U.S. is closely monitoring. The U.S. President had requested reforms to the nuclear agreement with Iran to permanently halt Iran's nuclear program, remove time limitations, include extensive inspections, and prevent the development of ballistic missile programs. Tehran rejected negotiations on the JCPOA. U.S. allies have called for the preservation of the JCPOA. Ultimately, Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement. According to Reuters, Admiral John Richardson, commander of U.S. naval operations, stated on May 13 that "we are now entering a period of uncertainties; how the world will react to these new developments is uncertain." Admiral Richardson emphasized that "[we must] maintain our vigilance, meaning we should be even a little more prepared than usual for any reaction or event or anything else." These remarks from the senior U.S. military official came after his visit to the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush off the coast of Virginia, where U.S. and French forces are currently conducting joint exercises. In another part of his remarks, Admiral Richardson noted that since Trump's announcement to withdraw from the JCPOA, the U.S. military has not observed any "provocative actions" from Iran, but is closely monitoring everything. Over the past years, various reports have emerged regarding Iran's actions in the Persian Gulf and the U.S. military's responses to them. Last August, a spokesperson for the U.S. Navy Command Center announced that an Iranian drone approached the U.S. aircraft carrier Nimitz in the Persian Gulf and, in his words, "violated maritime norms and international laws." In response, the public relations of the IRGC's drone unit stated, without providing details, that the patrol mission of this unit was "normally conducted within the country's air defense control area" and, as described by this unit, "in accordance with current laws." This incident was the second confrontation of this kind within just one week. U.S. officials claim that the actions of the IRGC forces approaching their ships are "unprofessional" and "dangerous" and may pose a "risk of a miscalculation."
