U.S. Concern Over North Korea's Nuclear and Missile Threats and Military Support for Russia in Ukraine War

A senior U.S. official stated on Wednesday, October 17, that the United States and its allies are 'worried' about North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, as well as the country's increasing military support for Russia in the Ukraine war, but cannot confirm Ukraine's claims regarding the dispatch of North Korean soldiers to Russia to fight on its behalf. According to the Associated Press, Kurt Campbell, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, mentioned that there are signs indicating North Korea is enhancing its support for Moscow by sending military equipment, including artillery and missiles, for Russia's war against Ukraine, which he said 'creates further instability in Europe.' He added that the United States is still assessing reports regarding the deployment of North Korean military forces to Russia. The Deputy Secretary made these remarks after discussions with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts about the need to increase international pressure on North Korea. According to the Associated Press, Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo announced plans on Wednesday with eight Western countries to launch a new multinational working group to monitor the enforcement of sanctions against North Korea. Russia vetoed a United Nations resolution in March of this year, an action that lifted the oversight of UN experts on Security Council sanctions against North Korea. This has led to accusations against Russia that it is acting to maintain the ability to purchase weapons from Pyongyang to meet its needs in its war with Ukraine. Joe Biden announced a new $425 million aid package from the U.S. to Ukraine, while the Middle East crisis and the Ukraine war were the focus of the first summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Zelensky unveiled his proposed 'Victory Plan' in Parliament, and Blinken emphasized the continuation of U.S. military and economic assistance to Ukraine.
