U.S. Expresses Concern Over Islamic Republic's Extraterritorial Actions to Suppress Opponents

Ibrahim Peeli, the Deputy Special Representative of the United States for Iran, expressed concern on Monday, June 4, regarding the Islamic Republic's extraterritorial actions to suppress opponents, sharing an image from his meeting with Iranian activists. Peeli wrote on the social media platform X: "I had an important meeting with Siamak Aram and members of the National Solidarity of Iran about the extremely concerning extraterritorial repression by the Iranian government against opponents and journalists." The U.S. Deputy Special Representative emphasized: "Such threats, especially on U.S. soil, are completely unjustifiable and must stop." Siamak Aram, the director of the National Solidarity Group of Iran, previously stated on June 5 in a video about a protest against a memorial for the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in the Potomac area of Maryland that some participants at the event threatened the protesting attendees "with death." Images from this event, shared on social media, show a man next to a police officer making a threatening gesture by placing his hand on his neck, an act interpreted as a beheading gesture. Last week, Peeli referred to these incidents on social media, stating: "I am concerned about reports of attacks by supporters of the Iranian regime against peaceful protesters around the world and their threats." A group of Islamic Republic supporters also attacked opponents in London on June 5 during a protest against the memorial for Ebrahim Raisi, injuring four people. The severe government crackdown and the risk of protests going underground are highlighted by accounts from doctors and eyewitnesses regarding the injured in protests. The limitations of China-Iran relations have also become apparent amid the protests.
