U.S. Federal Court Charges Suspect in Attempted Trump Assassination with Two Gun-Related Crimes

According to Reuters, Ryan Wesley Roth is likely to face additional charges, but currently, two counts of carrying a firearm as a felon and possessing a weapon with an obliterated serial number allow authorities to keep him in custody while investigations continue. The assassination attempt occurred while Trump was playing golf at his private club in West Palm Beach, Florida, and U.S. Secret Service agents shot at a man who was aiming a lightweight 'AK' rifle with a scope at Trump. The Secret Service identified Ryan Wesley Roth as the shooter and reported that he was arrested after fleeing in an SUV to another city. They are investigating his motives. According to the Associated Press, records show that Ryan Wesley Roth, a 58-year-old man arrested as a suspect in this act, spent most of his life in North Carolina before moving to Hawaii in 2018. He and his son operated a company that built small storage units in Hawaii. Roth regularly posted on social media about the Ukraine war, attempting to raise funds and volunteers to send people to fight against Russia in Kyiv. In 2020, Roth had asked Trump to issue an order mandating the Department of Justice to prosecute police abuses. On Monday, Trump expressed gratitude on the social media platform 'Truth' to all those who expressed concern for him and wished him well following the incident on Sunday. He also thanked the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement for their 'protection' as the 45th President and Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The second assassination attempt on Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign has faced condemnation from senior politicians in both the Democratic and Republican parties. U.S. President Joe Biden, hours after reports of the possible assassination attempt on former President Trump, stated on social media platform X that he received information about the matter from his team and praised the actions of the 'Secret Service' and their law enforcement partners. Biden emphasized that the Secret Service needs to receive 'more help' and noted that he does not yet have a 'complete report' on the incident from Sunday, expressing gratitude that Donald Trump is 'doing well.' Mike Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, also reacted to the report of the possible assassination attempt on Donald Trump, stating, 'He is not going to stop fighting for the American people, and it was really encouraging for us to meet with him immediately after this incident.' Kamala Harris, the U.S. Vice President and Trump's Democratic electoral rival, expressed her relief that the former president was unharmed shortly after the shooting report was released, emphasizing that 'violence has no place in the United States.' J.D. Vance, Trump's electoral partner who would become Vice President if he wins the November 5 election, also stated that he spoke with Trump after the failed assassination attempt on Sunday and described his spirits as good.
