U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee on Bloody Suppression of Protests: The Biggest Problem in Iran is 'the Regime Itself'

The Republican majority of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a message on X, referred to the ongoing bloody suppression of protests in Iran, stating that the Islamic Republic regime is 'the biggest problem in Iran.' The message published on the committee's X account noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has recently cut off the internet, arrested at least 10,681 'dissidents,' and 'massacred' over 544 protesters. The message emphasizes that the Islamic Republic regime has no 'moral standing' to preach to the U.S. or its allies, and 'the biggest problem in Iran is the regime itself.' A few days earlier, the Republican majority of this committee had also stated in an official statement that the people of Iran are fed up with the 'tyrannical Ayatollah and the repressive and bloodthirsty clerics,' and with the expansion of protests, 'the regime's hold on power is collapsing.' In the same statement and in a series of posts published on X, the committee wrote that anti-government protesters in some cities have 'taken control of the situation' and a nationwide 'uprising' against the regime is underway. The Islamic Republic officials have not yet provided clear statistics on the number of casualties and arrests, and independent media are facing serious limitations in field verification due to the nationwide internet shutdown. As protests escalate, Iranian officials have cut off internet access and parts of telephone communications at the national level; a move that human rights organizations have described as a 'tool for concealing repression' and a 'serious violation of human rights.' Experts warn that this 'digital blackout' makes documenting killings and human rights violations difficult and provides security forces with 'cover' to use deadly force against protesters with less media scrutiny. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has repeatedly warned about the killing of protesters by the Islamic Republic and its repressive apparatus. He has stated clearly and decisively that if the Iranian government begins killing protesters, the U.S. will practically assist the people and target the Islamic Republic. He emphasized: 'We will hit them very hard, exactly where it hurts the most. This does not mean sending ground troops, but it will be a very heavy blow.' Despite this unprecedented repression, posts shared on social media indicate that the widespread uprising of the Iranian people against the Islamic Republic continues despite killings, arrests, and communication cuts. This shows that the protests have not subsided, and large segments of society continue to stand against the government. Observers believe that what is happening in Iran today is one of the most serious challenges to the survival of the Islamic Republic in over four decades.
