U.S. House of Representatives Votes in Favor of Sanctions Against the International Criminal Court

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a new sanctions law against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague due to its issuance of arrest warrants for the Prime Minister of Israel and the former Minister of Defense of the country. At the same time, the Polish government announced that it would 'guarantee' the security of the Prime Minister or any other Israeli official attending the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, free from concerns about the ICC's arrest warrant. On Thursday, January 10, the House passed the 'Countering the Illegal Court Act' with the support of 243 representatives; a law that sanctions the ICC for investigating, arresting, or prosecuting any citizen of the U.S. or allied countries, including Israel, which is not a member of the court. 45 of the law's supporters were Democrats, and all 198 Republicans also voted in favor. Brian Mast, the Republican Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that the U.S. is passing this law because the ICC is seeking to arrest our major ally, Israel's Prime Minister. The sanctions against the ICC are among the first laws passed after the new Congress session began last week. Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House, said on Tuesday that he would quickly bring this law to a vote to emphasize U.S. support for Israel. John Toon, who has assumed leadership in the new Republican-majority Senate, promised that the Senate would also quickly approve the law so that Donald Trump could sign it immediately after taking office. The ICC, based on its prosecutors' agreement, issued arrest warrants two months ago for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, and Yoav Gallant, the former Minister of Defense, on charges of 'war crimes' and 'crimes against humanity' during the Gaza war. The U.S. House of Representatives, which was also under Republican control during Joe Biden's term, passed a law sanctioning the ICC, its prosecutors, and judges last spring when the possibility of issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders by the ICC was raised, but the Senate, which was still under Democratic control until last week, did not discuss that law. At the same time, the Polish government announced on Thursday that it 'guarantees' the freedom and security of any senior Israeli representative attending the Holocaust anniversary ceremony. According to Reuters, a senior aide to Andrzej Duda, the President of Poland, stated that Mr. Duda asked Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister, to ensure that Benjamin Netanyahu could travel to Poland without fear of arrest. Mr. Tusk's government issued a resolution on Thursday that did not mention Benjamin Netanyahu or the ICC's warrant, but Mr. Tusk stated that whether the Prime Minister, President, or any other Israeli official would come to the Auschwitz death camp ceremonies in safety. The Polish government will hold the mentioned ceremony on January 27, which corresponds to Bahman 8, in Auschwitz. The Israeli embassy announced that the Minister of Education would represent the country at this ceremony.
