U.S. National Intelligence: The Islamic Republic has reached the capability to rapidly produce nuclear weapons

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence of the United States announced on Thursday, December 5, that "Tehran has not yet produced a nuclear weapon, but has taken actions that could quickly lead to the construction of such a weapon." In the report titled "Monitoring the Nuclear and Terrorism Capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran," prepared in November and released on December 5, it emphasized that the Islamic Republic has not been constructing a nuclear weapon as of September 26, 2024, but continues to expand its nuclear and missile activities. The report also confirmed the "increasing activities of the Iranian government in nuclear and missile fields," noting that the Iranian government uses these actions "as a tool to increase influence and strategic threats against regional and global opponents and to alter the regional security balance." According to the U.S. National Intelligence report, the Islamic Republic has increased its stockpiles of uranium enriched to 20% and 60% purity since July 2024, and has also expanded the number of its advanced centrifuges. The National Intelligence Office expressed concern over recent statements by Iranian officials regarding the "deterrent value of nuclear weapons," warning that this shift in perspective could strengthen support for nuclear weapon production among decision-makers in the Islamic Republic. The report also stated that Iran's uranium reserves have now reached a level sufficient to produce more than 12 nuclear weapons if enriched to weapons-grade. The report identifies the Islamic Republic as "the holder of the largest ballistic missile stockpiles in the region" and emphasizes that Iranian officials have "leveraged their missile and drone attacks on Israel and Russia's experience in using Iranian drones in Ukraine to improve their missile systems, and cooperation with this country in developing space missiles could reduce the time required to produce intercontinental ballistic missiles." Meanwhile, another report from this intelligence agency confirms that the Iranian government is training and assisting Russian forces in drone operations, and Tehran and Moscow have agreed to establish a joint drone production line on Russian soil. The Iranian Foreign Minister threatened Western countries on Thursday, December 8, stating, "If the West reactivates UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic, nuclear negotiations will shift towards the construction of nuclear weapons." Abbas Araghchi, who traveled to Lisbon to participate in a meeting with European Troika negotiators, added, "The Islamic Republic has now acquired the capability and knowledge to build nuclear weapons, but this is not currently Tehran's security strategy." He severely criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency and its director for issuing a resolution against the Islamic Republic last week, noting, "Rafael Grossi, the director of the Agency, had promised Iran that after Tehran's proposal to limit uranium enrichment to 60% and allow four inspectors to visit the country's nuclear sites, he would prevent the approval of this resolution, but he failed because the Europeans were inclined towards confrontation and discord rather than understanding and cooperation." The Iranian Foreign Minister also attributed Tehran's decision to launch thousands of "new and highly advanced" centrifuges to European pressure and the issuance of last week's resolution, stating, "Iran remains within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and continues to seek cooperation; we currently do not intend to exceed 60% enrichment to reach a dignified solution to this problem." The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency condemned Tehran's non-cooperation with the Agency and its secrecy regarding the Islamic Republic's nuclear activities in a resolution passed on Thursday, December 1, 1403. The three European countries, Britain, France, and Germany, issued a resolution calling on Tehran to immediately cooperate with the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency and to take "necessary and urgent actions" to resolve safeguard issues. Britain stated that the Iranian government's nuclear ambitions pose a "global threat." Abbas Araghchi threatened the West: "Sanction us, and we will build a nuclear bomb." Reuters reported that the Iranian government is installing more centrifuges at Natanz and Fordow. Netanyahu announced the agreement for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The G7 condemned the Iranian government's "destabilizing actions" in the Middle East. The U.S. stated that it will not participate in negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the three European powers. A senior Republican member of Congress stated: "I will not be intimidated by the Iranian government's threats." A bipartisan congressional plan to counter the Iranian government's schemes in America was proposed.
