U.S. Navy Begins Escorting British-Flagged Ships in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States Navy has begun escorting commercial ships flying the British flag that intend to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon announced this news on Monday, May 3, stating that after a British-flagged commercial vessel requested assistance from the U.S. Navy stationed in the region to safely transit the Strait of Hormuz, the Navy responded positively to this request. The U.S. Navy has been escorting U.S.-flagged commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in response to the seizure of a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, Iran claims that security in the region is 'completely established' and there is no need for U.S. Navy escorts for ships. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Pentagon officials believe the problem fundamentally lies in Iran's behavior in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Maersk, the shipping company that has a commercial vessel and its crew currently detained by Iran, stated that it has again consulted with Iranian officials regarding this matter but has made little progress. Maersk tweeted: 'We continue to do the best we can to resolve the issue. Our main concern is the safety of the crew and the safe freedom of the vessel.' The company noted that its representative has met with officials from Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization and the Danish ambassador has also met with officials from the Iranian Foreign Ministry. Maersk emphasized that it has not yet received an official written notice from Iranian authorities regarding the seizure of the vessel and its cargo and has called for the immediate release of the ship and its crew. The Islamic Republic claims that the vessel and its crew were seized due to Maersk's debts to Iranian companies and institutions.
