U.S. Navy Dismisses Commander of Sailors Detained in Iran

The U.S. Navy has announced the dismissal of the commander of 10 American sailors who were detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Persian Gulf. According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Navy stated on Thursday that it has lost confidence in Eric Rush, the executive officer of the squadron, and the 10 sailors involved in the incident that occurred in January. The Navy's statement noted Eric Rush's background, mentioning that he was responsible for training and mentoring over 400 personnel in his unit. U.S. officials previously stated that nine male sailors and one female sailor aboard two U.S. Navy patrol boats entered Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf on January 12 due to a navigational error and were detained by the IRGC. The occupants of these two Riverine boats were en route from Kuwait to Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is stationed. Iran released the sailors after 16 hours. Meanwhile, a U.S. Navy official, who requested anonymity, told the Associated Press that Eric Rush lacked qualities such as effective leadership, oversight, and adherence to standards. According to the report, Eric Rush has been removed from command of this unit and reassigned to another unit. The U.S. military had previously stated that the sailors, along with all equipment from the seized boats except for the SIM cards of two satellite phones, were returned. The U.S. Navy initiated an investigation following the release of the sailors. Ashton Carter, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and other officials criticized the Iranian forces for detaining the sailors, stating they entered Iranian waters due to a 'navigational error.' Maritime law experts in the U.S. had previously emphasized that Iran violated international laws by detaining the U.S. Navy sailors. They argued that under maritime law, the innocent passage of vessels is legal as long as they are not involved in military operations or espionage, and therefore Iran should not have detained these sailors. However, the Supreme Leader of Iran praised the IRGC's actions and awarded 'Victory Medals' to the commanders involved in the detention of the American sailors.
