U.S. Secretary of State Arrives in South Korea for 'Summit for Democracy'

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, arrived in South Korea on Sunday as part of his first leg of an Asian trip to participate in the 'Summit for Democracy.' According to the U.S. Department of State, Blinken will lead a delegation at the ministerial meeting of the third round of this summit, which will take place from March 18 to 20 in Seoul. The ministerial meeting will be held on the first day, followed by sessions with civil society on the second day, and a virtual leaders' summit on the third day. The Summit for Democracy is an initiative by President Joe Biden that was first held virtually in December 2021 with the participation of leaders from dozens of countries around the world. South Korea is a key ally of Washington in East Asia, with approximately 27,000 U.S. troops stationed there to protect its ally against threats from North Korea. Washington and Seoul are currently examining ways to enhance 'extended deterrence' against North Korea, and Blinken will meet and discuss with his South Korean counterpart in this regard. According to a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Antony Blinken is set to travel to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, after Seoul to reaffirm America's unwavering commitment. The United States has intensified efforts to strengthen long-standing relations with its regional allies in East Asia to counter threats arising from China's policies in the region. North Korea's response to the joint military exercises between South Korea and the U.S. includes a military drill titled 'Rapid Conquest of Enemy Territory' in the presence of Kim Jong Un. The commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command has warned about security threats from North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran. U.S. intelligence agencies have indicated that the country is facing a 'fragile global order.' Constructive discussions took place between the two superpowers; the foreign ministers of the U.S. and China negotiated in Munich. Biden is hosting the leaders of ASEAN, with the goal of the U.S. being to counter China's influence.
