U.S. Secretary of State Begins Trip to Israel and Jordan

On Wednesday, October 11, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken departed the United States for a trip to Israel and Jordan. According to the U.S. State Department, Mr. Blinken will visit Israel and Jordan from October 11 to 13 and will engage in discussions with senior officials in these countries. The report states that the U.S. Secretary of State will once again express his condolences for the 'victims of terrorist attacks' in Israel and will condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. He will also emphasize America's solidarity with the government and people of Israel. Furthermore, Blinken is expected to discuss measures to enhance Israel's security and reiterate the unwavering support of the United States for Israel's right to defend itself. Reuters reported that the Secretary of State is traveling to the Middle East with the aim of preventing a broader war in the region. According to Reuters, Mr. Blinken is also set to meet with senior Israeli officials, possibly including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss increasing U.S. military support for Israel. One of Antony Blinken's priorities is to convey a deterrent message specifically aimed at the leaders of the Islamic Republic and their proxy groups, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. Additionally, he will work with U.S. regional allies to secure the release of over 100 hostages held by Hamas. President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday, October 10, that at least 14 American citizens were killed in the Hamas attack on Saturday, October 7. However, reporters from various American news networks reported on Wednesday that a spokesperson from the State Department indicated that 22 Americans had been killed in the Hamas attack on Israel. Following the Hamas attack, which is supported financially and militarily by the Islamic Republic, more than 1,200 people have been killed, including several foreign nationals, and over 2,700 have been injured. Mr. Biden mentioned that Hamas has taken several American citizens hostage during the attack on Israel and has taken them to Gaza. Antony Blinken's trip comes as preparations for forming a national unity government in Israel are underway. Reuters noted that amidst these developments, Israel is preparing for a potential ground invasion, having killed over a thousand people in Gaza, which is under Hamas control, through its retaliatory airstrikes in recent days.
