U.S. Seizes Iranian Oil Shipment Amid Rising Tensions

Reuters reported, citing a British maritime security company and three informed sources, that the United States has seized an Iranian oil shipment in recent days as part of intensified sanctions. The report indicates that the U.S. Department of Justice seized the tanker 'Suez Rajan' after it loaded a shipment of Iranian oil. Informed sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, stated that Washington took control of the oil shipment from the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker after confirming a court order. Ship tracking information showed that the last reported position of the tanker was near southern Africa on April 22. The maritime security company Ambrey Intelligence also confirmed that the seizure of the Iranian tanker by the U.S. occurred at least five days before the seizure of the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker in the Sea of Oman by the Islamic Republic. This British company stated that its experts' assessments indicate that the Iranian Navy took retaliatory action by seizing this tanker in response to the U.S. action. The Islamic Republic announced on Thursday afternoon, May 7, that the Iranian Navy had seized the 'Advantage Sweet' tanker, which was flagged by the Marshall Islands and had 28 crew members, while it was en route from Kuwait to Texas in the Sea of Oman. The Fars news agency claimed that this ship was stopped by the Navy after colliding with an Iranian vessel. In this context, the Financial Times quoted an American official as saying, 'It appears that the seizure of the tanker heading to Texas was in retaliation for the recent seizure of Iranian oil by the U.S.' As oil markets remain volatile, the seizure of the oil shipment effectively marks the 'activation phase of intensified sanctions,' representing the latest tension between Washington and Tehran after years of U.S. sanctions pressure over Iran's nuclear program.
