U.S. Special Envoy Condemns Anti-Semitic Slogans at Pro-Palestinian Protests

Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism, stated in a tweet: "We express our regret over the anti-Semitic slogans and symbols at recent protests, including the chants of 'Burn the Jews' in Sydney." She condemned the slogans of those who take to the streets in cities like London and New York to celebrate the killing of 1,200 civilians by Hamas. She said, "Celebrating the slaughter and assault on civilians or chanting 'From the river to the sea' has nothing to do with advancing security, welfare, freedom, and democracy for Palestinians. Such hatred only makes achieving peace harder." The U.S. Special Envoy continued: "This is not a matter of religion or politics. Killing has never been acceptable and cannot be justified by any belief or ideology. Whatever your views on Middle East politics, targeting people because they are Jewish or based on a real or perceived connection to Israel is anti-Semitic." Deborah Lipstadt was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 30, 2022, as the Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism with ambassadorial rank. In this role, she leads global efforts to advance U.S. foreign policy in combating anti-Semitism.
