U.S. Special Representative's Deputy: The Execution of Jamshid Sharmeh Indicates the Continuation of Iran's 'Shameful Actions'

The Deputy Special Representative of the U.S. State Department for Iran reacted on Monday, November 7, to the news of the execution of Jamshid Sharmeh by the Islamic Republic, stating in a message on X that if the news is true, it shows that the Iranian government continues its shameful actions. Abram Paley wrote: 'We are reviewing reports about the execution of Jamshid Sharmeh, a dual German-Iranian citizen, by the Islamic Republic, and in our opinion, if true, this indicates the latest shameful act of the regime in its long history of transnational repression and the accelerating rate of executions in Iran.' He also noted: 'Jamshid Sharmeh should never have been imprisoned. His abduction and transfer, as well as his sham trial and reports of torture, were reprehensible. We will continue to follow these reports and hold the Islamic Republic accountable for such horrific actions in collaboration with the international community.' Previously, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, had stated in response to the execution of Jamshid Sharmeh: 'The execution of prisoners by the Islamic Republic is a fundamental violation of human rights, and the U.S. has repeatedly stated its opposition to such actions.' Jamshid Sharmeh, a 68-year-old dual German-Iranian citizen and permanent resident of the United States, was abducted by the Islamic Republic's intelligence forces in the UAE in the summer of 2020 and forcibly transferred to Iran. After a trial that the international community deems 'sham,' he was sentenced to death on charges of 'corruption on earth.' The judiciary of the Islamic Republic announced the execution of this political activist on Monday.
