U.S. Treasury Sanctions Iran's Missile and Drone Procurement Networks

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against five individuals and seven companies in Iran, China, and Hong Kong for their involvement in supplying key components for Iran's missile and drone programs. According to a statement released on the department's website on Tuesday, August 1, these sanctions were imposed due to violations of Executive Order 13382 by the U.S. President, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction. The Treasury identified two procurement networks based in China and Iran that played a role in supplying accelerometers, gyroscopes, and other components necessary for Iran's missile and drone programs. These networks used shell companies and intermediaries to conceal their activities. The sanctioned companies include the Beijing-based technology development company 'Shiny Nights' and the Iranian electro-optical industries company 'Sapa'. These companies are accused of supplying sensitive components for Iran's military programs and aiding in the development of Shahed drones used by Russia in the Ukraine war. Other newly sanctioned entities include the Iranian engineering services company 'Azmoon Pazhoohan Sensor' and the Chinese company 'Shenzhen Rion', whose activities are detailed in the Treasury's latest statement. The new sanctions block the assets of these individuals and companies in the U.S. and prohibit any transactions with them for American citizens and companies. These sanctions could also expose foreign financial institutions and companies that cooperate with these networks to potential sanctions. Brian Nelson, the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, warned that the U.S. will continue to identify and sanction those who assist Iran in developing and proliferating dangerous weapons. He emphasized that these actions aim to prevent further instability in the region and protect civilian lives. Despite accusations from Ukraine and Western countries that Iran supports Russia's military aggression by exporting its offensive drones amid the Ukraine war, Tehran denies these allegations. The European Union Council in Brussels announced on July 16 this year that due to 'Iran's support for Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, armed groups and entities in the Middle East and the Red Sea region', member states have decided to extend current sanctions against the Islamic Republic for another year.
