U.S. Treasury Secretary on Hamas Attack on Israel: All Options for Sanctions Against the Islamic Republic Are on the Table

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned the Islamic Republic of Iran that if it is linked to the Palestinian militants' attacks on Israel, all options for sanctions are on the table. According to the Financial Times, this warning comes as Yellen emphasized that no decisions have yet been made regarding economic sanctions. On Wednesday, during a press conference in Morocco, she stated that the U.S. is 'constantly' reviewing its sanctions policy against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah. While strongly condemning the attacks by Palestinian militants, including Hamas, she noted that Washington uses incoming information to adjust sanctions. She stated that no options regarding potential future actions are being ruled out. Yellen, speaking at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank on Wednesday, mentioned that $6 billion related to a prisoner exchange agreement with the Islamic Republic remains 'untouched' in Qatar and is only to be used for humanitarian purposes. Critics argue that this money opens up other resources in Iran to support the Islamic Republic's terrorist activities. U.S. officials have previously stated that they have not yet seen evidence indicating that the Islamic Republic played a direct role in Hamas's attack on Israel on Saturday. They emphasized that the Islamic Republic has been supporting Hamas on a broader scale for years. An Iraqi militia group supported by the Islamic Republic threatened the U.S. Israel retaliated against Lebanon following the firing of 'guided missiles' from Lebanon into Israel. The U.S. is seeking to establish a 'safe corridor' from Gaza to Egypt. Two senior senators emphasized the Islamic Republic's role in strengthening Hamas, stating that terrorists must not be allowed to win.
