UK Defense Minister Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Scandal

Just hours after the UK Prime Minister's office expressed 'confidence' in the government and its ministers, media in the country reported on Wednesday the resignation of Defense Minister Michael Flynn following a sexual harassment scandal. Reuters reported on Wednesday, November 1, citing a spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defense, first the news of Flynn's resignation and then part of his resignation letter. In his resignation letter, Mr. Flynn admits that his past behavior has not met 'high standards.' He refers to 'several allegations concerning members of Parliament, including allegations regarding his past behavior.' This comes after the Prime Minister's spokesperson had reiterated earlier on Wednesday that the Prime Minister 'has confidence in the government and ministers are doing their jobs.' According to reports, in recent weeks, a file has been circulating in Westminster, the seat of the UK government and Parliament, containing the names of several Conservative MPs and descriptions of their sexual relationships and preferences, along with allegations of sexual harassment. One of these individuals is Damian Green, the Deputy and close friend of the Prime Minister, who has denied all allegations regarding his inappropriate behavior with a female journalist. Michael Flynn had previously apologized for placing his hand on a female journalist's knee. Just hours before the announcement of Mr. Flynn's resignation, Theresa May had asked leaders of other parties to meet with her to discuss the same sexual allegations reportedly occurring in Westminster. Mrs. May also stated to the House of Commons that members of all political parties in the country are 'deeply concerned' about the scandal of sexual harassment allegations that, according to the French news agency, has 'shaken' Parliament in recent days. However, these sexual allegations are not limited to the Conservative Party. On Tuesday, a prominent political activist from the Labour Party, which is currently the opposition party, claimed that she was raped six years ago by a member of this party. Following this news, Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party, praised the courage of this female political activist and ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.
