UK Police: London Attack Could Have Been Much More Extensive Than What Occurred

British police say the attackers in the vehicle and knife assault on citizens in London intended to carry out more extensive attacks and were attempting to rent a larger vehicle to run over people. According to the London police's investigation disclosures, the attackers aimed to rent a heavier vehicle for the assault. Meanwhile, they had at least 13 bottles filled with flammable materials with them. London police report that in the attackers' vehicle, in addition to the Molotov cocktail bottles, welding lights were also found. The London attacks were carried out by three attackers who, during the busy hours of Saturday night, ran over citizens at 'London Bridge' and then attacked people with knives in a nearby area. According to the police, one of the attackers, Khuram Shazad Butt, had attempted to rent a 7.5-ton truck hours before the attack, but due to not being able to make the payment, they used a van they had. Security officials say if the payment and rental of the truck had been successful, the attack in London could have been 'much worse.' Dean Haydon, the head of counter-terrorism forces, added that the attackers might have intended to return to the vehicle and use the Molotov cocktail bottles: 'We do not know this, but it can be speculated' that they had such an intention. The counter-terrorism commander also emphasized that there is no indication that the attackers had any connection to foreign entities or were directed by foreign groups in their attacks. Previously, a group known as 'Islamic State' claimed responsibility for the London attacks. During these attacks, eight people were killed and dozens were injured. British police have so far arrested 20 people in connection with the investigations following this incident.
