UK Warning: The World is on the Brink of a 'Third Nuclear Age'

The UK's highest military official has warned about the increasing cooperation between Russia, the Islamic Republic, and North Korea, stating that the world is on the brink of a 'third nuclear age' and facing multiple simultaneous challenges alongside a weakening of regulatory frameworks that previously controlled threats. Admiral Tony Radakin, Chief of the UK Armed Forces, identified several challenges facing the West, including Iran's non-cooperation with international efforts to limit its nuclear program, Russia's threat to use tactical nuclear weapons in its war with Ukraine, China's efforts to build nuclear stockpiles, and North Korea's 'unstable behavior.' He noted that all these threats are accompanied by an increase in cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilizing Western countries. Radakin added that the UK must take seriously the threats, including the possibility of a direct nuclear attack from Russia on the UK and its NATO allies, even if the likelihood is very low. He stated that while the Cold War saw control by two superpowers with nuclear deterrence and the past three decades were defined by international efforts to limit the spread of nuclear weapons, the current era is 'more complex.' The Chief of the UK Defense Staff emphasized that the world is on the brink of a third nuclear age, grappling with the proliferation of nuclear and destructive technologies and the absence of past security mechanisms. He described the deployment of North Korean soldiers at the Ukrainian border as the 'most extraordinary development' of the year and warned that further troop deployments are also possible. Admiral Radakin stated that Russia's use of Iranian drones and its threat to arm the Houthis in retaliation for Western support of Ukraine divides the world into three groups. According to him, one of these groups consists of 'autocratic governments' including Iran, Russia, China, and North Korea, whose aim is to disrupt the global order, while the other two groups are 'responsible countries' and those that position themselves between the two for maximum benefit. The UK always keeps at least one submarine equipped with nuclear missiles at sea to respond in the event of a nuclear attack. The UK government is currently reviewing its strategic defense to determine how its armed forces should confront new challenges.
