Ukraine: 58 Shahed Drones Shot Down During Russian Attacks

The Ukrainian Air Force announced on Saturday, September 8, that it had shot down 58 out of a total of 67 Shahed drones launched by Russia towards the country. According to a statement reported by Reuters, the launch of these drones from two border areas in Russia and the occupied Crimean Peninsula activated air defense units in 11 regions of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Parliament also released a separate statement on its Telegram channel, publishing images of drone wreckage near the Parliament building in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Kyiv is protected by a network of air defense systems from the former Soviet Union and Western countries, and it is rare for Russian missiles or drones to penetrate this deeply into the capital. The Ukrainian Parliament is located next to the buildings of the presidency, government, and central bank of Ukraine, in an area that is among the most heavily protected. The images published on the Parliament's Telegram channel show at least four pieces of the downed drones. One of these pieces is located near the main entrance steps of the Parliament, and shrapnel marks are visible on the surface of another piece. A Reuters reporter in Kyiv reported hearing multiple explosions from the city center around 3 a.m. on Saturday, with the loud echoes waking residents of the capital. Over the past two and a half years, Russia has carried out numerous attacks using Shahed drones manufactured by the Islamic Republic of Iran against infrastructure and civilians in Ukraine. Additionally, increasing military cooperation between the Iranian government and Russia over the past two and a half years has led the U.S. and its European allies to impose several sanctions packages against individuals and entities involved in this area. The directors of the CIA and MI6 announced on Saturday in a joint article that continued support for Ukraine against Russia is more important than ever. According to Reuters, William Burns and William Moore promised to expand U.S.-UK intelligence cooperation regarding 'Putin's aggressive war against Ukraine' and other areas. They stated that 'Putin will not succeed in ending Ukraine's sovereignty and independence.' They also promised cooperation to neutralize 'sabotage campaigns' and 'malicious use of technology' by Russia to 'create divisions among us.' The reorganization of these intelligence agencies to adapt to the emergence of China as a 'major intelligence and geopolitical challenge of the 21st century' and efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and free Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas were other points mentioned by the directors of the CIA and MI6 in their joint article.
