Ukraine and Russia Claim to Have Shot Down Each Other's Drones

On Friday, February 9, Ukraine announced that its army had shot down at least 10 Russian drones in the eastern Kharkiv region over the past 24 hours. This change comes as the war appears to have reached a stalemate, with both sides not making significant progress on the front lines. Zelensky stated in a statement that he appreciated Zaluzhny's leadership in the battle against Russian forces when many military analysts believed Ukraine would be quickly captured. However, he noted that 'the time for a change in military leadership has come, and the Ukrainian armed forces need to be reorganized.' In his statement, Zaluzhny mentioned that he had a 'serious and important dialogue' with Zelensky, and ultimately the president decided to change the 'tactics and strategy of war.' He added that the conditions of the early war are different from today, and they must adapt to new realities to achieve victory together. Valery Zaluzhny, 50, had an outstanding performance in countering the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and many, especially the military forces of the country, consider him a national hero. Some analysts believe that Zaluzhny could be a serious rival to Zelensky in future elections after the war. The replacement of Alexander Syrsky, 58, may create challenges for the Ukrainian military. He had commanded Ukraine's ground forces and gained fame for protecting Kyiv in the first month of the war and leading a successful counter-offensive in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine. However, it is said that Ukrainian soldiers view him as a commander in the style of the former Soviet army, who does not believe in retreating when necessary. For instance, Syrsky kept his soldiers in Bakhmut for a long time under heavy Russian fire and prevented their exit from the city. Zelensky and Zaluzhny shared a photo on their social media accounts shaking hands and smiling. Ukrainian officials reported on Thursday that Russia attacked targets in Mykolaiv and Odesa with 17 drones, but no casualties were reported. The Ukrainian Air Force announced that its air defense shot down 11 drones in the regions of Mykolaiv, Odesa, Vinnytsia, and Dnipro. The Russian army also stated on Thursday that it had shot down a Ukrainian drone targeting Crimea. These attacks occurred hours after Zelensky promised in his nightly address that Ukraine would retaliate against every Russian missile and drone attack. He also mentioned that Ukraine is working to strengthen its air defense system and prevent Russian attacks on various parts of the country.
