Ukraine Calls for Increased Sanctions Against Russia

The meeting of foreign ministers from member countries of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), held on Thursday, December 6, in Milan, Italy, was mainly dedicated to the recent tensions between Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that an unarmed aircraft of its Air Force had flown over Ukraine. The OSCE includes 57 countries, with both Russia and Ukraine as members. Pavlo Klimkin, Ukraine's foreign minister, emphasized at the meeting that 'words are not enough; action is needed,' stating that Russia's 'expansion of its aggressions' against Ukraine has created 'insecurity and instability' within the OSCE area, and further sanctions should be imposed on Moscow. However, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, claimed that 'the heinous actions of Ukraine and its Western supporters' are the cause of recent tensions. The conflict between the two countries escalated about two weeks ago following the attack by Russian forces on two Ukrainian military vessels and a tugboat in the Kerch Strait. The Ukrainian ships and their 24 crew members remain detained by Russia. During the Milan meeting, officials from the U.S., Canada, and several European countries condemned Russia's actions and called for the immediate release of the Ukrainian sailors. Wes Mitchell, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, stated that the OSCE 'cannot turn a blind eye to Russia's attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and its neighbors.' He also mentioned that Russia's actions in eastern Ukraine and Crimea have led to 'the greatest humanitarian crises in a generation.' Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister, referred to Russia's 'illegal annexation of Crimea' and its 'direct interference in the conflicts in eastern Ukraine' and 'illegal attacks on Ukrainian vessels and sailors,' stating that such actions 'should not be accepted by the international community.' Since 2014, the European Union, the U.S., and several other countries have imposed sanctions on Russia for its annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Defense announced on Thursday that an unarmed U.S. Air Force aircraft had flown over Ukraine. According to the Associated Press, the Pentagon stated that this flight, which carried several American and international observers, was conducted as a show of solidarity with Ukraine following the recent maritime confrontation, and described the flight as 'extraordinary.' This flight was carried out under the 'Open Skies Treaty' at Ukraine's request. The 'Open Skies Treaty' allows its 42 member states to conduct unarmed reconnaissance flights over each other's territories to promote transparency in military activities. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the flight was conducted using an unarmed military reconnaissance aircraft of the 'OC-135' model and carried observers from the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, the UK, Romania, and Ukraine. The U.S. Department of Defense stated that 'the timing of this flight underscores America's commitment to support Ukraine and other allied countries.' The Pentagon also emphasized that the United States seeks better relations with Russia, 'but until Russia's illegal and destabilizing actions continue, improving relations between the two countries will not be feasible.'
