Ukraine Claims to Have Attacked Russian Air Defense Systems in Crimea

The Ukrainian army claims that in nighttime missile strikes on the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, it has damaged three of Russia's ground-to-air defense systems. The Ukrainian General Staff stated on Monday, June 11, that these attacks resulted in 'significant damage' to Russian air defense, including an advanced S-400 system in Jankoy and two S-300 systems near Yevpatoria and Chornomorske. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented. Local Telegram channels reported explosions near Jankoy and Yevpatoria. Reuters cited the Ukrainian army stating that its attacks caused the Russian systems' radars to malfunction and munitions to explode in the area. The Ukrainian army's Telegram account noted that 'none of our missiles were intercepted by the enemy's 'highly efficient' air defense.' Russia has repeatedly fired ballistic missiles from Crimea, which it seized and occupied in 2014, towards southern Ukraine. Over the more than two years since the Russian invasion, Ukraine has also conducted multiple air and naval attacks on Russian targets in the peninsula, inflicting significant damage on Moscow's fleet in the Black Sea. Ukraine reported that on May 31, it damaged two ships in the Black Sea, halting their operations between the peninsula and mainland Russia. These ships were used to support an 18-kilometer bridge built by Russia, which Ukraine had previously attacked. In another news, a local Ukrainian official on Monday rejected claims by the leader of the Chechen region of Russia that Russian forces, led by a special forces unit stationed in Chechnya, had taken control of a border village in northeastern Ukraine. Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, stated on Sunday that the Akhmat-Chechen unit of Russian forces was leading the control of Rizhivka in the Sumy region. Kadyrov claimed that the 'planned large-scale advance' inflicted 'significant casualties' on the Ukrainian side, forcing them to retreat.
