Ukraine Reports Continued Advance of Its Forces in Kursk, Russia

The commander of the Ukrainian army announced the continued advance of his country's forces in the Kursk region of Russia, while some media reported that Ukrainian forces had destroyed an important bridge in Kursk. Alexander Syrsky, the commander of the Ukrainian army, stated in a video meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, August 16, that offensive forces had advanced between one to three kilometers further. He mentioned that 'all actions are proceeding according to plan' and also reported clashes in 'Malaya Luknia', located 11.5 kilometers deep into Russian territory. Meanwhile, Reuters quoted a Russian official reporting that Ukrainian forces destroyed an important bridge in the Kursk region on Friday. According to Alexey Smirnov, the governor of the Kursk region, this bridge was located over the Sim River in the Glushkovsky area. Some Russian media, citing security officials, stated that the destruction of this bridge cut off access to part of the region, making it more difficult to evacuate civilians from the area. Ukraine's operations in Russian territory and the border region of Kursk began on August 7. However, simultaneously with reports from Kursk, Russian attacks on eastern Ukraine have intensified. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian army, clashes on Friday were particularly intense in Pokrovsk and its surroundings in Donetsk, with these areas facing 'the heaviest attacks from Russia.' Ukrainian military officials in Pokrovsk have called for the immediate evacuation of civilians from the city, citing the 'faster advance of Russian forces.' The General Staff of the Ukrainian army also reported clashes in other areas in eastern Ukraine, including Kupiansk, Kramatorsk, and Siversk.
