Ukraine: Russia has concentrated its forces around a key city

A Ukrainian official said on Friday, March 2, that Russia is gathering a large number of troops around the city of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine with the aim of advancing in the Donetsk region. According to the Associated Press, Ilya Yulash, spokesperson for the operational group monitoring the eastern front line of Ukraine, told Radio Free Europe that Russia has concentrated its forces around this strategic city west of Bakhmut to advance towards the cities of Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk. Ukrainian forces fighting against the Russian army on the Bakhmut front say they have faced continuous infantry assaults, artillery, and drone attacks over the past three weeks. The report states that although Russia's gains have been minimal, slow, and costly, Ukraine lacks sufficient reserve forces and is facing a severe shortage of artillery ammunition due to reduced military aid from its allies. Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, signed a bilateral security agreement during a visit to the Kharkiv region on Friday, which includes two billion euros in military aid from the Netherlands this year and further defense assistance over the next decade. Mr. Zelensky stated in a post on social media platform X that the agreement prioritizes 'the provision of air defense systems, artillery, naval equipment, and long-range capabilities, with a special emphasis on strengthening Ukraine's air force.' A spokesperson for the 17th Ground Forces Brigade of the Ukrainian army told the Associated Press that despite limited resources, Ukrainian forces are doing their utmost to adapt their defense to Russia's constantly changing tactics, especially since they cannot respond with the same strength as Russia's attacks. Russian tactics include drone strikes and bombings to eliminate Ukrainian positions in cities, which raises concerns that if Western assistance for air defense systems and equipment does not arrive in time, Russia could target other frontline areas using the same tactics. Washington allowed its allies to deliver F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine in late July. The Netherlands and Denmark announced they would deliver them to Kyiv, but the delivery timeline depends on the readiness of Ukrainian crews and necessary infrastructure. Volodymyr Zelensky wrote in a post on Telegram that 'F-16' fighter jets will be flying in the skies this year. Despite Russia's apparent advances on the battlefield, Ukraine has shot down 13 Russian warplanes, three of which were downed on Thursday, March 1. This marks the highest monthly figure since October 2022. The President of Ukraine is awaiting military aid from the U.S.; discussions are ongoing regarding the seizure of Russian assets.
