Ukraine: Russia Targets Energy Infrastructure Dozens of Times Ahead of Winter

Ukrainian officials say that Russia has attacked Ukraine's energy infrastructure 60 times in recent weeks, ahead of winter and falling temperatures, leading to increased energy consumption in the country. Ukraine is concerned that Russia may have launched a coordinated campaign against its power grid for the second time before winter. Last winter, Russia targeted Ukraine's power grid with thousands of drones and missiles, causing widespread blackouts. Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine's energy minister, who is visiting the U.S., states that he is negotiating with Ukraine's partners on how to get through the upcoming cold and critical months. Although Ukraine has better air defense this winter thanks to Western assistance, its energy system is more vulnerable and has not yet recovered from last winter's attacks. The Ukrainian army claims that Russia has stockpiled hundreds of missiles for winter air operations. The Ukrainian government also announced that a thermal power plant in the east was shelled on Tuesday evening, November 7. Power distribution networks in Donetsk in the east, Kharkiv in the northeast, and Kherson in the south have been damaged due to Russian attacks. While recent attacks have not yet caused blackouts across the country, officials are concerned that attacks may intensify as winter approaches. Russia is currently advancing in eastern regions. Ukraine has made limited progress in counterattacks that began in June in the east and south. The Ukrainian army reported that its forces have repelled Russian attacks in separate combat areas and are preparing for a renewed effort to capture the important city of Avdiivka. Ukraine has repelled 9 attacks in Avdiivka and its surroundings, where Moscow began its latest attacks in mid-October. The city of Avdiivka has become a symbol of Ukraine's resistance and is considered a gateway to reclaiming key areas in the east, including Donetsk, which is located 20 kilometers away. When Russian-backed separatists seized vast areas of eastern Ukraine in 2014, this city was briefly occupied but was later retaken by Ukrainian forces. Meanwhile, a military official in Avdiivka stated that several days of rain have complicated any new Russian advances, as military equipment is not able to move well. Russia invaded Ukraine in March 2022, and currently, parts of Ukrainian territory are under Russian occupation. The Russian President has repeatedly warned that his country will use any means to defend itself, framing the invasion of Ukraine as a battle for Russia's survival against the West. In contrast, the United States and its allies have emphasized their continued support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion 'for as long as it takes.' The destruction of Ukraine's infrastructure in the Russian attack has led the country to turn to clean energy. The U.S. energy minister has called for Russia to cease military activities near Ukraine's nuclear power plant. The G7 group has reaffirmed its commitment to cooperate to ensure the supply chain of essential materials. Zelensky stated that Ukraine will respond to Russia's winter attacks.
