Ukraine Shot Down 24 Russian Drones; Zelensky Calls for Strengthening the Country's 'Defense Shield'

On Thursday, October 5, Ukraine announced that it had destroyed 24 Russian drones overnight. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Spain to ask European allies for support in strengthening his country's air defense. Ukraine stated that Russia had dispatched a total of 29 drones to the regions of Odessa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad. Upon arriving in Granada, Spain, Zelensky emphasized the importance of having a 'defense shield' for Ukraine during the winter, as Russia is expected to launch numerous missile and drone attacks. He also referenced the full support from U.S. President Joe Biden, adding that 'our main challenge is to maintain unity in Europe.' After a group of congressional Republicans called for cutting funding for immediate assistance to Ukraine, Biden contacted key American allies, including Canada, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, France, the UK, the European Union, NATO, and Japan, to assure them of U.S. military support for Ukraine. John Kirby, the White House National Security spokesperson, stated that leaders discussed efforts to continue sending munitions and weapon systems needed by Ukraine for its self-defense and to further strengthen its air defense. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army Command announced that it had sent approximately 1.1 million rounds, which the U.S. Navy had seized from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps last year, to Ukraine. Tehran had attempted to deliver these rounds, in violation of United Nations regulations, to Houthi fighters in Yemen.
