Ukrainian Athletes Arrive in Paris for the Olympics

Ukrainian athletes have headed to the Paris Olympics amid the ongoing military invasion by Russia in various regions of their country. According to Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the participation of Ukrainian athletes in the Paris Olympics as a 'great achievement.' On Wednesday, July 25, he stated that given the wartime situation in Ukraine, the presence of these athletes in Paris is very important and will have a significant impact on maintaining a sense of 'normalcy' in the lives of the people. Ukraine will participate with 140 athletes in the Summer Olympics in Paris, marking the smallest sports delegation from the country since its independence from the former Soviet Union. In his video address, Zelensky noted that despite the war and full-scale terror from Russia, Ukrainian athletes are heading to the Olympics fully prepared, which he termed a 'great achievement.' He added that the Ukrainian flag and national anthem will be alongside those of other countries that respect Olympic life and values. Zelensky expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Ukrainian athletes to maintain the morale of the people and help preserve a sense of normalcy in the country. Since the onset of the Russian military invasion, Ukraine has been working extensively to prevent the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, Moscow's ally, in the Paris Olympics. In this context, only about 15 Russian athletes will participate as neutrals, without using the Russian flag or anthem at the Paris Olympics. Their records and backgrounds have been carefully scrutinized to ensure they have no ties to the Russian military or government entities. Russia claims these restrictions are 'unfair and discriminatory,' which is why some of its athletes have refused to participate in the Paris Olympics as neutral athletes. Zelensky also stated that the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin represent that today the only sport in Russia is 'the slaughter of people.' He emphasized that the world will never tolerate this and that Russia must be defeated in this 'war and terror' for life to prevail. Security measures have been intensified in France alongside the Paris Olympics; the second suspect in an attack has been arrested. Katz warns: 'Iran's proxy terrorists are seeking to attack Israeli athletes at the Olympics.' The French Minister of Interior stated that 1,000 individuals have been banned from entering the Olympics on suspicion of 'espionage.'
