Ukrainian Forces Withdraw from Some Kharkiv Areas, Zelensky Postpones Foreign Trip

Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from areas in Kharkiv following a new Russian offensive in the northeastern part of the country. The new Russian attack prompted Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, to postpone his foreign trip, which could indicate a deterioration of the situation in the Kharkiv region. He was scheduled to visit Spain and possibly Portugal but chose to remain in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for better management of the war. In recent weeks, Russian forces have advanced in the eastern region of Donetsk, putting significant pressure on the Ukrainian army. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported late on Tuesday, May 25, that Ukrainian soldiers retreated from two areas, Lukyantsy and Vovchansk, in Kharkiv to prevent further casualties and damage. Russia claims to have captured Lukyantsy, but this claim has not been independently verified. Vovchansk is located about five kilometers from the Russian border and has been a focal point of intense clashes between Russian and Ukrainian soldiers. As Russian forces prepare to enter the city, Ukrainian soldiers are struggling to resist. Meanwhile, the Office of the President of Ukraine states that additional reinforcements, including reserve units, have been sent to the area. In this context, Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, during his visit to Kyiv, announced a new $2 billion arms deal with Ukraine, emphasizing Washington's continued support for the country. Blinken's visit coincided with a heavy Russian assault in the Kharkiv region, considered the most significant border offensive since the war began in Ukraine. According to Antony Blinken, the new arms deal will fund short-term weapon procurement, investment in defense-industrial bases, and the purchase of weapons from other countries. This amount is part of a $60 billion aid package from the U.S. that was finally approved in the U.S. Congress after a long delay.
