Ukrainian Innovators' Efforts to More Effectively Down Russian 'Shahed' Drones

Late last month, in a basement in downtown Kyiv, hundreds of engineers and innovators met with senior military officials from Ukraine to find more effective ways to neutralize the cheap Iranian drones that Russia is using to devastate Ukrainian cities. The organizers of the event distributed a $3 million prize among three teams of experts who designed the best drones or electronic warfare technologies against the Iranian 'Shahed' drones used by Russia in the war against Ukraine. The 'Shahed' drones fly in groups toward their targets and explode upon impact. Official data shows that Russia attacked Ukraine with over 300 drones in May. Last winter, Russia attempted to disrupt Ukraine's power grid with airstrikes, making the protection of energy resources a significant challenge for the upcoming winter. Iranian drones fly at such low altitudes that they can evade detection by air defense systems. However, their navigation systems are designed in a way that makes it difficult for anti-drone weapons that disrupt radio frequencies to shoot them down. The West has provided advanced air defense systems to Ukraine to counter missile attacks, but officials say it is not ideal to shoot down $50,000 drones with $1 million missiles. Therefore, experts are looking to reduce the costs of the tools used to down 'Shahed' drones. The event organizers asked Reuters not to disclose the full names of the participants for security reasons. One participant, whose team designed a quadcopter, stated that this drone flies much faster than other drones and can cover longer distances. Another participant, an engineer and deputy of a Ukrainian company, said his team has proposed designs for new anti-drone systems that will be more effective against 'Shaheds.' Last year, Ukraine launched a fundraising project aimed at creating an "army of drones," which has become a government program covering everything from drone production to pilot training. The total number of drones used by Ukraine in the battlefield is unclear. Yuriy Shyhol, a military official responsible for overseeing government programs, stated that 15,000 drones have been purchased so far, most of which were supplied through the Ministry of Defense, with the rest obtained through foreign aid. He told Reuters, "Our goal this year is to purchase over 200,000 drones, and we will buy as many drones as are available in the market." Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, mentioned that drone production is currently taking place across Ukraine, and manufacturers have been instructed to spread their work across various locations and use shelters for parts of the production process. He also noted that over 80% of the purchased drones are made in Ukraine and assembled there.
