Ukrainian Parliament Votes Confidence in New Foreign Minister

Following the resignation of Ukraine's Foreign Minister, the parliament voted to approve the president's nominee for the position. Ukrainian media reported on Thursday, September 6, that the Ukrainian parliament confirmed the appointment of Andrii Sybiha, former ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey, as Foreign Minister with a majority vote. He received 258 votes from representatives, replacing Dmytro Kuleba, who is one of the most recognized senior officials in the country due to his active and constant presence in international meetings and forums aimed at garnering more support and assistance from Western countries for Ukraine. Andrii Sybiha, 49, had been Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine since April of this year. The appointment of the new foreign minister is part of President Volodymyr Zelensky's efforts to reform and revitalize the government as the war with Russia enters a critical and decisive stage. Continuing Russian missile attacks; the Ukrainian parliament agreed to the resignation of four cabinet members. Volodymyr Zelensky intends to change about 10 members of the government. This is the largest cabinet reshuffle since the beginning of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. In addition to the foreign minister, ministers of strategic industries, justice, natural resources, and agriculture have also resigned or been dismissed, and others will be appointed in their place. According to the Ukrainian constitution, the appointment of ministers requires parliamentary approval. The war in Ukraine with Russia, which has lasted over 900 days, is on the verge of entering a potentially decisive phase. The arrival of winter will be a critical test for Ukraine's resilience and capacity. Due to missile and drone attacks by the Russian army, about 70% of Ukraine's electricity production capacity has been destroyed, and the country will face a more severe energy shortage in winter, disrupting electricity transmission and water supply. On the battlefronts, Ukraine is waiting to see if its military gamble in operations to infiltrate the border areas of Russia's Kursk region, which began about a month ago, will yield positive results. Meanwhile, the Russian army continues to advance in the eastern fronts in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, relying on superior weaponry and greater numbers, putting many Ukrainian cities within the range of Russian long-range weapons. It is unlikely that the cabinet reshuffle in Ukraine will lead to significant changes in the country's policy. Volodymyr Zelensky's five-year presidential term ended in May this year, but under the law of martial status in the country, he remains in this position, and his leadership has not yet been challenged. The main responsibility of the new Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who also worked in the Office of the President of Ukraine for a time, is to ensure the continuity of Western countries' assistance and to prevent a decrease in attention to Ukraine's needs due to Western public fatigue over the ongoing war.
