Ukrainian-Russian Citizen Arrested on Terrorism Charges in Paris

A source in the French anti-terrorism prosecutor's office told Reuters on Wednesday, June 6, that a 26-year-old Ukrainian-Russian national, who was injured due to an explosion of explosives he was carrying, has been arrested. According to this informed source, the explosion occurred on Monday in a hotel in northern Paris, and the suspect, who was rescued by firefighters, suffered severe burns from the blast. This source added that during a search of his room by police officers, some materials and explosives for making a bomb were discovered. The source stated that an investigation into this individual, suspected of involvement in terrorist activities and conspiracy to commit bombing, has been initiated by the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office in cooperation with France's internal security agency. The embassies of Russia and Ukraine in Paris did not respond to Reuters' request for comments on the matter. Charles de Gaulle Airport, which is near the suspect's place of detention, stated that its operations have not been affected by this incident. France is at the highest level of security alert and readiness ahead of the Paris Olympic Games, which will begin in late July. This significant sporting event, held in a complex geopolitical situation and particularly in the shadow of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Gaza, poses a major security challenge for the French government. Last month, French security agencies thwarted the first case of planning an attack on the Olympics. In this operation, an 18-year-old Chechen man was arrested on suspicion of preparing a suicide attack on the Saint-Étienne football stadium.
