UN Alarm: Humanitarian Aid Situation in Afghanistan is 'Critical'

The United Nations has warned that the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan may face 'severe obstacles' as donors have only provided 6% of the requested funding for 2024. Indrika Ratwatte, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, called on the international community to double its commitment and increase financial support for the Afghan people in a statement released on Tuesday. This senior UN official expressed 'deep concern' over the current budget level, noting that the international organization has so far secured about $290 million of the $3 billion needed. The UN humanitarian coordinator further warned that 'such a significant gap between existing needs and funded budgets will severely hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid (to the people of Afghanistan).' UN agencies estimate that more than half of Afghanistan's population needs humanitarian assistance and warn that the lack of financial aid exacerbates one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The return of the Taliban to power in 2021 has increased the challenges facing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, and critics cite 'the Taliban's restrictions on women and girls' as a major factor in the reduction of this aid. The United States is granting 12,000 'special immigration visas' to eligible Afghan citizens. The Pakistani Air Force confirmed the bombing of 'terrorist hideouts' within Afghanistan. The campaign 'Alliance Against Gender Apartheid' seeks to classify the Islamic Republic and the Taliban as a gender apartheid regime. Ongoing water tensions between Iran and the Taliban continue; a spokesperson for the water industry stated that the Taliban did not provide Iran with its water rights from the Helmand River. Most Security Council members called for the repeal of the Taliban's 'oppressive policies' against women in Afghanistan.
