UN Expresses Concern Over Increase in Hate Speech Against Palestinians

The UN Committee on Racism based in Geneva expressed concern on Friday regarding the rise in racist and derogatory hate speech against Palestinians by some Israelis, including senior Israeli officials, since the Hamas attacks on October 7. The Israeli diplomatic mission in Geneva responded by stating that this statement 'disappointed all victims of the October 7 massacre and victims of anti-Semitic attacks worldwide.' According to Reuters, since the onset of Hamas's attack on Israel, which resulted in 1,400 deaths and prompted relentless Israeli assaults, there have been increasing reports of anti-Semitic and Islamophobic attacks in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The committee, which is 'very concerned' about recent statements from senior Israeli officials, politicians, and public figures, has called on Israel to condemn such hateful rhetoric. The committee's statement referenced comments made by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on October 9, where he referred to Palestinians as 'human animals.' The statement further warned that such remarks 'could be a trigger for attacks aimed at genocide.' Gallant's comments have already been condemned by Palestinians and others. The committee also reiterated its previous recommendation to Palestinians to combat hate speech and incitement to violence against Jews. The Israeli diplomatic mission at the UN stated that the committee's statement 'cynically ignored' the rising anti-Semitism, attacks on Jews, and calls for the slaughter of Jews. The UN committee's concern about racism came after Israel criticized Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, accusing him of justifying Hamas's attacks on Israel. Guterres rejected Israel's accusations, calling them a misinterpretation of his statements. The UN committee consists of eighteen independent experts and is responsible for monitoring compliance with the 1965 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which both Israel and the Palestinians have ratified.
