UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Calls Resumption of War in Gaza a 'Catastrophe'

On Friday, December 1, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the resumption of war in Gaza as 'catastrophic' and stated that the current situation is 'beyond a critical point.' Volker Turk, in a statement, urged all parties and the countries that influence them to intensify their efforts to ensure a renewed ceasefire for humanitarian and human rights reasons. The Israeli army accused the Hamas militant group of violating the ceasefire agreement and launching rockets towards Israel. In a statement, the Israeli army said, 'In response, attacks on this terrorist group have resumed.' The Israeli army also reported on its Telegram channel that its fighter jets are currently targeting 'Hamas terrorist objectives in the Gaza Strip.' Israel and the Hamas militant group exchanged dozens of Palestinian prisoners and hostages during a one-week ceasefire achieved through the efforts of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. Meanwhile, Hamas officials, who govern Gaza, stated that Israeli fighter jets attacked southern Gaza, including areas east of Khan Younis, and that three people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli army urged Palestinian civilians to evacuate Hamas operational areas. Tehran, ignoring Hamas's rocket attacks, accused Israel of resuming the war. The Israeli army reiterated that attacks have resumed in response to Hamas's violation of the ceasefire agreement.
